Mabel and Tilly are the dominant hens in our little flock. Mabel is in charge of security; she prowls the yard and chases after any intruders. Tilly is in charge of home defense; she knows where all the chickens are at any time.

Greta (& Esther)
Breed: Bantam Silver Blue Duckwing Old English Game
Born: ~January 2004
Personality: Docile but quick
(Esther was killed by a hawk in November 2004.) Greta is older than Mabel & Tilly, but size makes a difference. She's less than half the size of the barred rocks, but what she lacks in girth, she makes up for in cleverness. She can steal food from the other hens right from under their beaks!

Betty – RIP November 2006
Breed: BB-Red Rosecomb Bantam
Born: ~July 2004
Personality: Flighty and crazy
Betty's the youngest of all the birds; she's also the lowest in the pecking order. She tends to run around like the sky is falling and then the other birds feel compelled to peck her because she's annoying them. Betty was killed by a red-tailed hawk in November 2006.

Edith & Gertrude – RIP Summer 2006
Breed: Partridge Silkie
Born: ~July 2004
Personalities: Two peas in a pod
Although we named them after Edith Head and Gertrude Stein, we affectionately refer to them as The Honkers. They seem to share a brain and, since they look almost identical, we haven't had luck in telling them apart. They were adopted from the SPCA; their previous owner had dropped them off because she realized that chickens don't make good housepets. The gals died of strokes the summer of 2006.
